The groups that constitute the axis focus on:

  • Innovative approaches for the characterization and the deconvolution of sample complexity at different scales (elemental, isotopic, molecular) as well as at different steps of the analysis procedure
  • Multi-dimensional and multi-scale hyphenated methods (ie separative and detection methods) for complex matrices
  • Innovative sample preparation methods for ultra-trace analysis

Research targets issues across diverse areas such as omic sciences (metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics), (bio)pharmacology, exposome, environment, bioenergies, chemistry, traceability and authenticity of natural and bio-sourced products.

Biological Analysis by Mass Spectrometry

Biomarkers can be used to detect a change in the physiological state of a patient that correlates with the risk or progression of a disease (eg. Alzheimer’s disease) and/or to assess chemical exposure and the cumulative, adverse effects of toxicants in ecotoxicology. The discovery and the validation of new biomarkers raise many both analytical and […]

Chromatography & Hyphenated Techniques

Comprehensive two-dimensional chromatography (LC x LC or LC x SFC) is a recognized powerful approach for complex sample analysis. The numerous analytical challenges involved by its implementation are addressed by the group Chromatography & Hyphenated Techniques: Interface between both dimensions. Based on theoretical approaches, the group proposes innovative solutions to the problem of injection in […]

Isotopic & Organic

Stable isotope analyses are widely used to trace and understand biological or industrial processes. The Isotopic & Organic Group carries out innovative developments using stable isotope ratio measurements (2H/1H, 13C/12C, 15N/14N and 18O/16O) in different research programs in partnership with industrial or academic scientists. Isotopic analyses are usually performed using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometers (IRMS) […]

Plasma spectroscopies, hyphenated methods & speciation

The “Plasma spectroscopies, hyphenation& speciation” group develops new spectroscopic tools and their hyphenations. Elemental and isotopic fingerprints are essential to identify a sample, its geographical origin or even to trace a specific process. Speciation studies on key elements are important to evaluate the element fate in the environment. The group carries out innovative developments using […]

Natural & Bio-based Products

The group develops large databases for the identification and authentication of natural and bio-based products as well as comprehensive multi-technique analyses in order to determine origins of contamination or to detect and quantify undesirable products especially in food, natural and bio-based products or environmental matrices. These methodologies have application within the fields of Agricultural and […]

Traces

The group develops analytical methods, based on both targeted and untargeted strategies by mass spectrometry, to characterise markers of pollution and the impact of organic contaminants on human health or environmental sentinel species. TRACES develops innovative methods involving improvements at each step of the analytical protocol or original coupling: sampling, sample preparation, chromatographic separation, detection […]
