Lecture by Dr. Dominik Schwudke from the Research Center Borstel – Leibniz centrum “Lipid metabolic switches in lung diseases and its detection” at the Institute of Analytical Sciences on June 21, 2017 (10:00 am)
Abstract: Dominik Schwudke will present Lipidomics approaches that help us to gain insight into the complex reorganization of lipid metabolic networks during bacterial and viral infections. The maintenance of lipid homeostasis in tissues and cells is a prerequisite to sustain a good health status. During viral and bacterial infection the nutritional resources as well as biochemical building blocks become an essential part of the fierce competition between pathogen and host. No other term than ‘consumption’, the historical term for tuberculosis (TB), describes this struggle for resources better, but might also be a hint for new therapeutic strategies that aim to interfere with the nutritional intake of the pathogens.
In the past couple of years we have developed Shotgun Lipidomics approaches using high-resolution mass spectrometers to study the perturbation of the host lipid metabolism due to infection by M. tuberculosis. I will provide some insights how we can use lipids to count the bacterial burden, provide feedback on the efficiency of host directed therapies directed towards neutral lipid metabolism and manipulation of lipid signaling.
