Biography

Didier LEONARD is Senior Lecturer (Professeur 1ère classe) at the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 since 2008. Engineer in Materials Sciences from Université Catholique de Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium), he got his Ph.D. degree in the same University in 1996. He was then successively appointed as Post-doc at the department of materials science of the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland) (1996-2000) and as Surface analysis scientist at the Analytical Technology Department of General Electric Plastics Europe (Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands) (2000-2003). In 2003, he became Lecturer (Professeur 2ème classe) at the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 within the Laboratoire des Sciences Analytiques (now ISA – Institut des Sciences Analytiques UMR 5280 since 2012) where he has been leading a research team bringing together specialists of surface science and sensor developments. He was the (co-)leader of the then newly formed SIMS team and is still currently the coordinator of the Surfaces, (bio)Interfaces & Micro/nano Systems (SIMS) research axis of ISA, being also leader of one of the three SIMS research groups (Surfaces group). He is also an elected member of the ISA Council (Conseil d’Unité).

For what concerns his teaching activities, Didier LEONARD is a Lecturer at Polytech Lyon (Engineer School of the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) in the ‘Matériaux et Ingénierie des Surfaces’ department. He also serves as Director for International Relations at Polytech Lyon and is member of Polytech Lyon executive committee (Comité de Direction). Didier LEONARD is also teaching in 7 masters from Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.

For what concerns his scientific activities, Didier LEONARD has developed a strong experience in applying adequate surface characterization to understand the mechanisms of surface modification processes (functionalization, coatings) to trigger specific surface driven properties. Over the years, he has been working on high variety of material substrates (polymers, textiles, papers, semi-conductors, metals,…) through numerous collaborative projects (ANR, FUI, ISI, EU, industrial collaborations,…) and working on applications as diverse as plasma surface treatments applied to polymers, surface modification of textiles, sensor development, photoactivatable grafting, antimicrobial or photocatalytic coatings, release of additives from packaging, tribochemistry characterization,…. He is currently co-author of over 75 publications (h-index = 19), 1 patent, 6 chapter books and over 100 communications (oral/poster) in international conferences (including 12 invited talks). He is member of several evaluation committees including ANR and the Techtera Comité Scientifique et Technique.
