Pierrick Berruyer is currently a PhD student under the supervision of Pr. Lyndon Emsley and Dr. Anne Lesage. His research is focused on the development of methods for the determination of three-dimensional structure of surface catalytic species using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Surface Enhanced NMR Spectroscopy (DNP SENS).
If the system under investigation is located at a surface, as in many of the most interesting functional materials today, the problem of structure determination is largely unsolved. Such samples are encountered with increasing frequency, particularly in the area of energy and catalysis, so that there is a critical need to provide new methods for structural characterization of surfaces. Solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy would be the method of choice for surface characterization if it were not that the detection limit of NMR is too low to allow the study of many modern materials. The sensitivity of NMR is thus the major limitation to surface structure determination. Thus, using state-of-the-art DNP NMR approach, Pierrick Berruyer is working on how this surface structure determination problem can be solved.

Biography

After succeeding in the competitive entrance examination, Pierrick Berruyer entered the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon) in 2010 where he received both bachelor (2011) and master (2015) degrees. In summer 2013, he got the opportunity to spend 3 months in the laboratory of Pr. Jeffrey R. Long at the University of Berkeley (California, USA) working on inorganic chemistry synthesis. In 2014, he was received at the French “aggregation” in Physical Sciences (option Chemistry), a selective examination to become teacher (high school, bachelor and equivalent teaching). He started working with Anne Lesage and Lyndon Emsley in DNP NMR in 2015, first for master thesis and then for doctoral studies.
